Ottawa (Ont.) – Today, Canada Post is issuing a new commemorative envelope to recognize the 150^th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference – that began on September 1, 1864 – a historic milestone in Canadian history, marking the discussions of representatives from the colonies of British North America. The envelope, available in select post offices and online, showcases a photograph of the conference delegates on the steps of the Government House in Charlottetown.

“The Charlottetown Conference marks the beginning of our country and we are proud to commemorate this milestone with a special envelope,” says Jim Phillips, Director of Stamp Services at Canada Post.

When the 23 delegates met at the Charlottetown Conference, it was a ground-breaking meeting as representatives from the Maritimes and the Province of Canada agreed on the feasibility of a union and vigorously debated the form it might take. With the possibility of a union, many complex questions of governance, division of power and financial relations arose. The conference ended in Charlottetown with the decision to hold another meeting a month later in Québec.

About the commemorative envelope
The Charlottetown Conference commemorative envelope was designed by Isabelle Toussaint, and 8,000 envelopes were printed by Lowe-Martin Group. The envelope measures 170 mm by 115 mm. Images are from the Public Archives and Records of P.E.I and P.E.I. 2014. The envelope will be cancelled in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
