OTTAWA – On November 14, 2017, Canada Post received Notices to Bargain from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). Notices were filed for both bargaining units covering Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (CUPW-RSMC) and Urban employees (CUPW-Urban).

The CUPW-RSMC collective agreement is due to expire on December 31, 2017; CUPW-Urban’s collective agreement expires on January 31, 2018. The current collective agreements will continue to apply once they expire, in accordance with the Canada Labour Code.

Notices to Bargain are routine; they kick off the labour negotiations process. Canada Post must now begin two separate negotiations within 20 days.

While Canada Post’s negotiating teams will meet with the two bargaining units before Christmas, we don’t expect negotiations to begin in earnest until the New Year. Negotiations typically last months.
